As a therapist specializing in children’s mental health, I’ve witnessed firsthand how play therapy can unlock a child’s potential for growth, healing, and connection. For children, play isn’t just a leisure activity; it’s their natural language and a powerful means of expressing themselves when words fail.

What Is Play Therapy?

The Association for Play Therapy defines play therapy as "the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development." Play therapy is a structured and evidence-based approach that leverages the natural process of play to help children explore their emotions, improve communication, and resolve psychological challenges. Unlike traditional talk therapy, play therapy uses toys, art supplies, sandtrays, games, and role-playing to create a safe and engaging environment for children to process their inner worlds.

There are various forms of play therapy, including Child-Centered Play Therapy, Autplay, Adlerian Play Therapy, Theraplay, Filial Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapy, Gestalt Play Therapy, Synergetic Play Therapy, and Solution-Focused Play Therapy. Additionally, other modalities such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), TF-CBT (Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), IFS (Internal Family Systems), Yoga, Qi Gong, Breathworks, Safe and Sound Protocol, Ear Acupuncture, Music and sound healing can be effectively integrated with play therapy to support treatment objectives.

How It Works

Children often struggle to articulate complex emotions, especially during periods of stress or trauma. Through play therapy, therapists meet children at their developmental level, using play as a medium to:

  • Build trust and rapport: Play breaks down barriers, allowing children to feel safe and understood.

  • Process emotions: By engaging in symbolic play, children can confront and work through feelings like fear, anger, or sadness.

  • Develop problem-solving skills: Guided activities help children explore solutions to challenges in a low-pressure setting.

  • Enhance self-esteem: Success in therapeutic play builds confidence and a sense of mastery over their environment.

Benefits of Play Therapy

Play therapy has been proven effective for addressing a wide range of issues, including:

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Trauma and PTSD

  • Behavioral challenges

  • Attention and focus difficulties

  • Social skills and peer relationships

For neurodivergent children, including those with autism or ADHD, play therapy can also be adapted to support sensory integration, emotional regulation, and executive functioning skills.

What Does a Play Therapy Session Look Like?

A typical session might involve a variety of activities tailored to a child’s unique needs:

  • Creative arts: Drawing or painting to express feelings.

  • Role-playing: Using dolls or puppets to reenact situations.

  • Sandtray therapy: Building miniature worlds that reflect their inner experiences.

  • Game-based therapy: Incorporating structured games to develop coping strategies.

Why Play Therapy Matters for Parents

As a parent, it’s natural to want to understand and support your child through their challenges. Play therapy not only helps children but also offers insights for parents into their child’s needs and emotional world. Many therapists incorporate parent consultations or family sessions to strengthen the parent-child bond and ensure consistent progress at home.
